Let's explore what In The Brief is all about, why it exists, and who it's for!

What it is

Not in the Brief is a blog for curious creatives who want to explore beyond the expected. It’s a space where I (Brittany) share design experiments, tools I’m testing, motion and AI workflows, and reflections on creativity.

This isn’t a polished portfolio. It’s a creative logbook for play, exploration, and honest process. Think of it as part playground, part sketchbook, part resource for fellow designers looking for fresh energy.

Why the Name

As a freelance designer working with agencies, I’m often brought in after the brief has been written. The scope is usually shaped by someone else, and it’s my job to execute within it. But I’ve always had the urge to go further.

Not in the Brief represents that impulse to explore more than what’s asked. It’s the ideas I play with even when they’re not part of the assignment. The motion test I sneak in. The tool I try just to see what happens.

It’s also a nod to the creative freedom that comes from side projects—where there are no constraints, just curiosity.

With new tools making experimentation faster than ever, this blog documents the creative space I carve out for myself. And I hope it encourages others to do the same.

Ideal Reader

Designers and creatives who:

  • Are curious about new tools, especially in AI and motion

  • Feel limited by repetitive client work or rigid processes

  • Want to reconnect with curiosity and creativity

  • Appreciate honest process and experimentation

Who’s behind this?

Hi, I’m Brittany 👋🏼
I’m a digital designer specializing in web, motion, and visual storytelling. I’ve been designing professionally since 2017 and collaborate closely with agencies on branding and digital projects—often helping shape the creative direction and guiding the design process from the inside.

That said, not every project has room to fully explore. Sometimes the client’s budget limits how far we can push the creative. And like most designers, I have ideas I want to try that don’t always fit within the scope.

That’s why I started Not in the Brief.

It’s a space for me to play, experiment, and follow creative instincts that might not get time or attention in client work. I share my process here, the tools I’m trying, and the ideas I’m chasing—hoping it inspires other creatives to explore more too.
